The Mystery of Fashion Trends

This summer it is "boho" chic. Last summer, it was preppy sailor simplicity. In the late 90's it was the grunge look. Yellow is the new black. Jeans are the new business casual. And on. And on. Yes, I am writing of fashion trends. The latest look, style, and color floods the covers of magazines, the shelves of retailers from Saks to H & M, the bodies of celebrities and television characters and, undoubtedly, is able to get enough of us to buy into it (literally and figuratively) to validate the whole cycle. So, while most of us are easily able to grasp this continuously perpetuating cycle of saturating the public with the latest, greatest duds, questions remain: how does a trend start? Who makes this decision? Why does it work?

Well, to be perfectly honest, there is no definitive answer to the myth that is a fashion trend. But, while the exact formula is beyond the consumer, we can be sure that it takes the work of several different interdependent fashion industry professions to convince us that espadrilles, suspenders, and terry-cloth suits are worthy of our dollars and donning.

Fashion designers gather their inspiration, whether it comes from popular culture, music, politics, a celebrity muse, or something else entirely. Then, they design - usually a spring and fall collection. With a slew of inspired, perfectly crafted designs ready to hit the runway, they show their collections.

It could possibly be said that the trend begins at the fashion show. Fashion writers, buyers, photographers and celebrities line the runways, waiting to take in, criticize and praise the designer's work.

Writers go back to their offices and verbally comment on the design they have seen. If a collection is deemed great, the editor may be persuaded to feature the clothing on the cover of the month's issue. This is also influenced by fashion publicists - professionals who are paid to get the designer's duds in front of larger audiences. Thus, we read about the latest fashion trend.

Photographers snap photos as the models parade down the runway and sell them to parties interested in the designer's work. The photos show up in newspapers, industry magazines, fashion magazines and various other media outlets. Thus, we see the latest fashion trend.

Buyers, if impressed, order pieces that their clientele will be willing to pay hundreds or thousands to own. Other designers, those focused on mass production of more affordable versions of the latest trend, gather their inspiration here too. Thus, we can purchase the latest fashion trend.

So, as you can see, it is impossible to pinpoint exactly how a fashion becomes a trend. What you can know, with certainty, is that it took many professionals in the fashion industry to get you to the cash register with your bohemian-inspired peasant blouse.

Fashion Over-The-Knee Boots

Like Superman around Kryptonite, we find ourselves powerless in the presence of fall's most unstoppable footwear fad: the over-the-knee boot. Rather than tucking our skinny jeans into mid-calf ropers or shoving our opaque-stocking-clad legs into wellies, right now we only want to slip on these semi-scandalous shoes. It may sound far-fetched, but it's true: these traffic-stopping boots are so aggressively chic that they make all other cold-weather options look pass. But why, you might ask, are these boots so powerful? For one, they were the sky-high style of choice for the most influential runways (which were jam-packed with up-to-there boots) and our favorite taste makers took to the look in seconds flat. In short: they're the season's superhero shoes!

Try something that will complement your shoes… Think “a modern Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz… a different colored dress or ensemble from your shoes. And there is never anything wrong with adding a couple more inches to your height. Follow the yellow brick road of style when your out to see your sweetheart! Adding a burst of the color red to coordinate with your outfit will make a lovely statement. If you are a miss “match-a-lot,” try coordinating your red accessories with your heels. Dress with Conscience: Eco-Friendly Fashion by Collen

In case you didn’t realize, Earth Day 2010 is today! All kinds of people – engineers, scientists, everyday consumers and fashionistas alike have had a concern for the environment on their minds. So we hear all kinds of things about renewable energy, recycling, energy efficiency, and hybrids, but what are some other Eco-friendly decisions that we can make? Look no further than your wardrobe.

What does it mean to be Eco-friendly? We usually think about turning off all the lights when we go to bed at night and only eating locally-grown produce. But what about what you wear? What do you need to know to dress Eco-consciously?

Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading animal-welfare protection agency, is partnering with many fashion retailers and designers to work towards sustainable, animal-free fashion. Companies like GG2G and Mission Savvy have already signed up, and their styles have really heated up thanks to this partnership. The companies are pledging not only to change to safer chemicals for their manufacturing, but also donating a cut of their profits to animal protection organization. The Mission Savvy Voice collection has pledged to donate directly to Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy work for animals. GG2G will also be using recycled materials for their new line of handbags. Looking at the styles, I’m convinced: this is a movement to be a part of.

So what should you keep in mind for your eco-friendly fashion? Look for companies that pledge to use recycled or partially-recycled materials, donate a cut of their profits to animal or environmental advocacy organizations, or pledge to use non-toxic materials. Also, don’t be afraid to buy vintage. Reuse clothing: stuff still looks great if it’s been warn a couple of times. Your vintage shoes, scarves, shirts, etc. will feel like new.

College Style Fashion by Primrose and Ritika

A student from Columbia bravely poses for the camera, showing off her distinctly college-style fashion. The outfit prepares her for the cold, and she radiates bravery and funky with her combination of textures, stripes, and leopard print. She picked neutral colors, so she doesn’t give spectators an eyeful, and she doesn’t call too much attention to herself. Her thick-framed glasses tell us that she’s ready for study. In fact, she’s ready for everything: to battle the cold and to stand out gracefully on a cold and cloudy day.

She layers well. The varying textures in the sweater, scarf, and coat illuminate her warmth and style in the cold. Her laying is top-heavy and adds length to her body. Unfortunately, the skinny jeans emphasize her bottom half. No matter what look she was going for, I’m really digging the animal print boots.

I’m hesitant to give the look two thumbs up. For the boots, I’ll give it one.

The great thing about this look is that it is versatile and adaptable. Mix and match your own colors and textures. We recommend that you stick with neutral tones when you’re mixing textures and patterns. After all, this look is for the everyday: class, work, and errands. Invest with Vests: Plus Size Fashion by Primrose

Vests are a great way to create a layered look without layering too much. With the cool season here, we want to keep warm and keep up with the fashion trends (its hard to see your glamorous top when its hidden under a sweater). A vest is a great way to dress up any outfit. By wearing casual foundations, such as t-shirts and jeans (or leggings), it can add a professional or polished accent to your closet basics.

Wearing vests are a quick versatile fix to add detail to my everyday style. On a casual day, I will simply layer my vests over a basic T-shirt or tank top and match with a pair of jeans and flats. And on a more dressy occasion, I can wear my vests over a decorative blouse: matching with leggings and heels. The vest trend is a year round classic that can easily be added for a “put together” look without much effort. Fashion should not be that difficult!

Plus size vests are now available in different styles of fabrics and textures. Usually similar in cut, the vest look is a must-have for your wardrobe. The vest length should sit below the waist to minimize the hips, and elongate your figure. Choose vests in solid colors and do not opt for prints. Layering over solid color tops within the same color scheme will slim down your figure. Layering over tops with a huge contrast will attract attention to the body that wears the lighter color (i.e. a black vest over a white top will focus more on arms, and a light colored vest over a dark top will focus on chest area). Staying within the same color scheme and minimal contrast will lengthen your torso area, and put less attention on certain body parts.

Also, consider the texture of the fabrics used on your vest. I like the vests that drape along the front neckline to the hem. The ruffled or draping detail actually let the eyes focus on the top and follow downwards, which makes you look taller and proportionate. Try to avoid thick textures which can only add more weight along your upper half.

Tips and Tricks: Summer Scarves by Colleen

In the wintertime, heavy woolen scarves are used to ward off the cold and stuff the unfortunate gaps between our coats and our necks. We bundle ourselves in knitted lengths of fabric of epic proportions, wrapping coils and coils around our necks and heads and shoulders until we are completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume covering our bodies. But we are warm, and somehow warmth became the fashion, and we continued to grab scarves even bigger and warmer and thicker than before. I love winter scarves, don’t you?

Anyway, now it is summertime, and the unfortunate need to wrap a woolen scarf around your neck 10 times so it doesn’t flop on the floor is gone. No longer do you need to wrap your neck up and ward off the cold–actually, now you need to mop off the sweat from the summer heat! But what types of scarves do you need for that? And how do you wear them?

1. The bandeau. A thin silk handkerchief wrapped around your neck, this is perfect to ward off the heat. You can always dip it in water and wrap it around your neck like the cowboy’s do, but I don’t think you want to ruin the nice silk.

2. The headscarf. Take a bright, brilliant colored fabric a little longer than the bandeau and tie it around your head like a headband. It will keep your hair pulled back and look bright and cheerful. Happiness!

3. The belted scarf. Use a thin, colorful scarf to belt a dress or shorts. It will add a little punch to your wardrobe!

Fashion Comes to The Great Wall of China by valentina

Quite spectacularly, The Great Wall of China was the backdrop for the most recent Fendi show. Karl Lagerfeld’s intention to stage the show at the World Heritage Site was announced in February, when he said, “It’s all about the opening of China, not just economically, but also from an artistic and cultural point of view.” Yet, even having all these months to get used to the idea didn’t prepare me for how amazing the whole event turned out to be.

It wasn’t the clothes so much as the staging that was so monumental. Actually, a lot of the designs were from the Milan show, with a small collection put together for this particular catwalk. But still, it was beautiful and glamorous.

Fashion is Weird: Egg Pendants by Valentina

Around Mother’s Day I noticed a few blogs promoting this Etsy nest pendant, and I thought it was weird. I don’t think it’s cute at all, and I’m rather certain my mom wouldn’t appreciate it as a gift. Maybe I’m egg phobic, but it just kind of grosses me out–don’t birds use hair and other sick stuff to make nests? I couldn’t ever wear such a thing. Now, I’ve come across a new piece of eggy jewelry, and I’m even more disturbed:






I think a baby turtle coming into the world is a beautiful, wondrous thing, but I don’t want to display a 14 karat gold depiction of this event around my neck. I bet they’re really slimy and alien like when they emerge out of the confines of the egg. Maybe I just have a general fear of nature.

Jewelry and accessories have always been the essential accent pieces to any outfit. A beautiful necklace, elegant bangle bracelets, and cocktail rings are usually worn to make a statement. With costume jewelry, estate jewelry, and fashion jewelry, you can’t seem to find both quality and style nowadays. Costume and fashion jewelry are decorative and have the elaborate look without the durability.

After reviewing jewelry designed by Carla Reiter, I have a newfound appreciation for art within a jewelry piece: a winning combination of quality and style. This jewelry maker has a strong handmade feel for knitted silver, gold, and copper material used in her collection. Her jewelry is not mass produced or renditions of marketplace accessories: this is pure art.

After looking at some styles in her collection, I was unable to grasp the concept of the design in itself. Knowing the materials and intricacy of each design had gained my interest. But when I saw a picture of a model wearing this stylish sculpture I was in awe. When worn, the captivation of each piece is inexplicable. She mentions that her jewelry is made to accentuate the curvature of the wristbone or collarbone, paying attention to detail and how the material lays on the human form. Carla Reiter is able to combine a sophisticated understanding of anatomy, physiology, and aesthetics.

My favorite styles are the ones which are richly patinated copper with small diamonds. The mixture of sparkly gemstone and rawness of copper make a unique balance of subdued elegance. I have never seen anything like this anywhere, and the only thing that would make me hesitant is the weight of the materials used when worn. Other than that, this is truly a perfectly tailored piece of nature’s beauty.

Carla was born in Palo Alto, California and raised in the Midwest. She went to Indiana University to study silversmithing but switched to sculpture after absorbing the rudiments of jewelry technique. She had imagined such elaborate designs and the possibilities of such techniques challenged her creations. With her background and knowledge of art and sculpture, this creative silvermith started hand- knitting three dimensional pieces with an understanding of the human body.
